DirecTV earmarks $13M for projects, upgrades

Satellite television provider DirecTV is wrapping up its 12th year of operations on the island with a $13 million investment in new projects slated through the end of 2011.
The investment will cover operational infrastructure projects, the launching of its new brand advertising campaign and new products offerings, said DIRECTV Puerto Rico General Manager Roque Lombardo.
“Our mission to provide subscribers with a unique entertainment experience through exclusive programming, innovative services, advanced technology and excellent customer service has been the key to the success of our company and has helped us to become the leaders in the local industry,” said Lombardo, noting the new initiatives are coupled with others the company has been working on in recent months, including strengthening its customer service infrastructure.
That includes relocating its Caguas office to a new space at the Plaza Centro Mall, for which it invested $200,000 and the upcoming relocation of its Ponce office to Plaza del Caribe Mall, at a cost of $250,000. DirecTV is also remodeling its facilities in Arecibo, Hato Rey and Mayaguez and will be adding 10 new points of sales and as many authorized dealers to its corporate infrastructure over the next six months.
“One of the areas that will benefit from the company’s expansion will be the central-mountain zone, where residents will have more access to DirecTV’s products,” Lombardo said.
The company headquartered in Carolina launched operations in Puerto Rico in July 1999, with an initial investment of $15 million. It went up against the island’s three established cable television providers by offering islandwide service. At present, DirecTV has more than 220,000 subscribers.
Lombardo said DirecTV’s “first class programming is joined by a variety of innovative services and advanced technology.” The paid television service provider is the only company in Puerto Rico to provide a pre paid service, catering to that demographic that seeks to control its entertainment-related expenses.
This year, DirecTV will launch a new package of services that will include its exclusive programming, plus 4G technology high-speed Internet access.
